Seven Killed in Northeast England After Wrong Way Collision During Police Chase

Seven people, including two police officers, died in a car crash near Middlesbrough in northeast England on Saturday. The incident occurred around 3:39 am on the A66 when a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way collided with a marked police vehicle. All occupants of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. The police car was carrying two serving officers, while the Passat contained five members of the public.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched a mandatory investigation into the crash. According to the watchdog, the collision occurred after police officers spotted a suspicious vehicle and a pursuit began. Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood both described the incident as devastating, with Mahmood noting that the officers were on active duty. Emergency responders sent 14 ambulance crews to the scene, including a hazardous area response team and a doctor from the Great North air ambulance service. The road was closed in both directions between Normanby Road and Church Lane for some time following the crash.
