Cleveland Police have arrested seven more men as part of an operation to disrupt organized crime following a head-on crash on the A66 that killed seven people. This brings the total number of arrests related to the investigation to 24. The crash involved a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat; it resulted in the deaths of PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, as well as five young men: Cole Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, Michael Robert Cahill, 23, and Jakub Matusiak, 23.
Among the latest arrests are four men, aged 21, 25, 35, and 40, who were stopped in a vehicle on Kingsley Road in Grangetown on Thursday night. They are being questioned on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, arson, and drug offences. Police reported that the criminal damage relates to a vehicle crashing into a house in Steele Crescent, while the arson involves a caravan set alight on Atlee Road. Class A drugs and a Mercedes car were seized during the stop, and one source noted that 15,000 pounds in cash was also recovered.
Three other men, aged 23, 30, and 42, were arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and possession of criminal property. All three have been released on conditional bail. In separate developments, police confirmed they are not linking the A66 crash to a house fire in Grangetown that killed a seven year old girl and her aunt. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with that fire.
Hundreds of additional police officers have been deployed to the Middlesbrough and County Durham area to support local forces following these incidents. Assistant Chief Constable Wayne Fox stated that several suspects have already been charged with serious offences and some have been recalled to prison.
