Seven Protesters Sentenced for Blocking Golden Gate Bridge

Seven pro-Palestinian protesters were sentenced to 30 days in jail for blocking traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge during a 2024 protest against Israel's assault on Gaza. The sentence includes credit for four days already served, with half of the remaining time spent in county jail and the rest served through a work release program. Additionally, the defendants received six months of probation and were ordered to pay fines and restitution exceeding 1,000 dollars. They will remain free while the case is appealed.

A San Francisco jury convicted the group in July on misdemeanor charges, including unlawful assembly, obstruction of thoroughfare, and false imprisonment. The jury remained deadlocked on a felony conspiracy charge that could have carried a sentence of up to 15 years, and prosecutors stated they will not retry those charges.

Defense attorneys argued that the demonstrators acted out of a moral responsibility to oppose Washington's support for Israel and the devastation in Gaza, noting that they turned to blocking the bridge after letters and appeals to Congress failed. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins countered that the protest created a safety risk and that there must be consequences when laws are broken. Superior Court Judge Teresa Caffese noted that civil disobedience historically involves accepting legal consequences.
