Rescuers have recovered the body of the 17th victim of an avalanche in Kabardino-Balkaria, ending the search and rescue operation. The disaster occurred on September 6 when an avalanche on Mount Mizhirgi struck a group of 33 climbers on a slope in the Bezengi Gorge. Ten of the athletes were able to descend by their own means. Some of the deceased were members of Russia's National Guard who were in the area for mountain training. This event marks the deadliest mountain disaster in Russia since 2002.
