Severe Flooding and Weather Alerts Hit Northern and Central Italy

Severe storms and flooding have struck several regions in Italy, with the city of Chiavari in Liguria experiencing significant flooding. In Chiavari, rainfall measurements ranged from 103 mm in one hour to 126 mm starting from 6 a.m. The municipality of Chiavari activated sirens due to the risk of the Rupinaro stream overflowing and advised residents to move to higher floors and avoid critical points. One person was rescued by firefighters from a flooded underpass in Lavagna. Traffic delays were reported on the A12 motorway between Chiavari, Recco, and Lavagna.

Weather alerts have been issued across multiple regions. Veneto is under an orange alert for hydrogeological risk, except for the Dolomites which are under a yellow alert. In Tuscany, intense precipitation and wind gusts exceeding 80 km/h were forecast, leading the city of Florence to close parks, gardens, and river cycle paths. In Liguria, Arpal issued an orange alert for the center east coast from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. the following day, while other areas remained under a yellow alert.
