Severe Storms and Flooding Trigger Danger Alerts Across São Paulo State

The state of São Paulo remains under a danger alert for storms through Monday, September 14, following a period of intense rainfall that has caused deaths, disappearances, and widespread infrastructure damage. The city of São Paulo recorded the highest 24 hour rainfall volume in Brazil between Friday and Saturday, with 75.4 mm measured at the Mirante de Santana station. This has contributed to September 2026 becoming the fourth rainiest September in the city's historical record since 1943. In the capital, a building under construction collapsed onto a residence in the Penha neighborhood, leaving at least two women dead, including one who was pregnant, and several others missing. In Jandira, three people were swept away by a flood, with two remaining missing. The Civil Defense and Cemaden have warned of a high risk of landslides and flooding, particularly in the Greater São Paulo area, Sorocaba, and the Vale do Ribeira. In the Vale do Ribeira, the Ribeira de Iguape River overflowed, forcing approximately 60 people into shelters in Ribeira and leading to the preventive evacuation of 173 people in Eldorado. The mayor of Eldorado attributed the river's rise to heavy rains in São Paulo and Paraná, as well as increased water discharge from the Capivari dam. Transportation has also been severely impacted, with the old Serra da Tamoios highway remaining closed due to the risk of landslides. Weather forecasts indicate that moderate to strong rains will persist through Monday, followed by a gradual decrease in precipitation starting Tuesday. A polar air mass is expected to keep temperatures low, with highs remaining below 20 degrees Celsius until September 17.
