Severe Storms and Tornadoes Cause Deaths and Widespread Damage Across Germany

Severe weather swept across multiple German states, resulting in at least two deaths and numerous injuries. The German Weather Service (DWD) confirmed that tornadoes occurred in Fürstenwalde in Brandenburg and in the Wetzlar area of Hessen. In Thuringia, a 40 year old man was killed by falling tree parts in Georgenthal. In the town of Waldorf in Rheinland Pfalz, a 58 year old woman died after a tree fell on a sheltered seating area where she and another woman were seeking cover. The second woman was seriously injured in the same incident.

In Hessen, the storm caused extensive structural damage. Approximately 60 houses were affected in Wetzlar, with some reports stating that roof parts flew up to 100 meters. In Solms, some homes were rendered uninhabitable after entire roof structures were lifted. In Rheinland Pfalz, the storm tore walls from houses in Höhr Grenzhausen and blew parts of the facade off the Aubachhalle in Bannberscheid. Power outages were reported in the Westerwaldkreis region, and a truck overturned on the A61 motorway.

Other regions also reported significant impacts. In Brandenburg, the tornado in Fürstenwalde damaged roofs and knocked over trees that hit cars. In Bavaria, specifically in Unterfranken, 13 emergency operations were carried out after trees fell on roads and vehicles. In Thüringen, emergency services responded to about 20 weather related calls involving flooded basements and damaged cars.
