Air Vice Marshal Shakti Sharma has become the first woman officer in a non-medical branch to attain the rank of Air Vice Marshal in the Indian Air Force. Commissioned into the IAF Education Branch in 1994, Sharma has served in various roles across Training Establishments, Field Stations, Command Headquarters, and Air Headquarters. Her career milestones include being the first woman Group Captain in the IAF outside the medical branch and the first woman from the Tri-Services to command a Sainik School, where she served as the principal of Sainik School, Kapurthala. Additionally, she played a key role in establishing IAF Chairs of Excellence at Pune University and IIT Kanpur. The Ministry of Defence described the achievement as a landmark that marks a new chapter for women officers in the Indian Defence Forces.
