The United States and Iran aligned Houthis launched separate attacks on shipping on Tuesday, August 11, as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war hit a fresh impasse. In the Gulf of Oman, a US Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles to disable the steering gear of the M/V Vela Nova, a Panama flagged cargo ship. US Central Command stated the vessel ignored repeated warnings and was attempting to violate a naval blockade of Iranian ports. In the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, suspected Houthi attacks on the Egyptian owned cargo vessel Tihamah resulted in the deaths of four crew members and two Yemeni rescuers. Houthi sources claimed the ship was carrying military equipment for Saudi Arabia.
Oil prices rose following the violence, with Brent crude futures climbing toward 90 dollars per barrel. The attacks occur as Iran's top security official, Mohsen Rezaei, declared that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless the US releases frozen Iranian assets and agrees to a region wide ceasefire, including in Gaza and Lebanon. President Donald Trump has countered these demands, asserting that the US has total control over the Strait of Hormuz and suggesting that Iran is no longer the bully of the Middle East. Trump has alternated between claiming a peace deal is imminent and threatening to hit Iran really hard.
Diplomatic efforts continue through mediators. Pakistan's interior minister visited Tehran, and Qatari officials stated that talks between Iran and Oman regarding shipping in the strait have reached an advanced stage. However, Iranian officials have maintained that any agreement with Oman is separate from the conditions required to reopen the waterway to general traffic. Maritime data indicates that traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains a fraction of pre war levels, with only six to ten vessels passing through on Monday compared to roughly 130 to 140 daily transits before the conflict.
