SIDE Chief Cristian Auguadra Debuts Before Bicameral Intelligence Committee

Cristian Auguadra, the head of the Secretariat of State Intelligence (SIDE), made his first appearance before the Bicameral Committee for the Oversight of Intelligence Agencies on Tuesday. Auguadra was accompanied by a large delegation of top officials, including José Lago Rodríguez, the subsecretary of intelligence. During the meeting, Auguadra addressed security preparations for the upcoming November visit of Pope León XIV, noting that the SIDE is coordinating with Vatican officials. He revealed that the Pope's itinerary will include a mass at the Basilica of Luján, an event with youth at the San Lorenzo stadium, a visit to Villa Devoto, and a meeting with social movements.

Financial and operational matters were central to the discussion. Auguadra explained that reserved funds for the SIDE increased from approximately 19 billion to 27 billion pesos, attributing the 8 billion peso increase to the operational and security needs of the papal visit. Regarding the agency's powers, Auguadra stated that the SIDE has not yet used the authority granted by decree 941/25 to detain individuals. He also defended the work of the National Antiterrorist Center (CNA).

The meeting was presided over by Sebastián Pareja, a deputy and close associate of Karina Milei. While the center right framing described the session as positive and without major conflict, the center left framing emphasized the political dimension of the meeting and the fact that Auguadra did not speak the most, with José Lago Rodríguez acting as the primary voice for the agency. Additionally, the center right report noted moments of tension when Auguadra denied claims by Kirchnerist deputy Rodolfo Tailhade regarding the return of Jaime Stiuso to the agency and allegations of internal dysfunction. Auguadra committed to providing written responses by next Monday for questions that could not be answered during the session.
