Singapore Fitness Alliance assists displaced True Fitness and True Yoga staff

The Singapore Fitness Alliance (SFA) is helping over 200 employees and freelancers find new jobs following the abrupt closure of True Fitness and True Yoga. In collaboration with the National Instructors and Coaches Association (NICA) and e2i, the SFA is coordinating job matching and skills retraining. As of September 13, between 230 and 235 affected individuals have contacted the SFA. A list of these individuals will be shared with member gyms, including Fitness First and Virgin Active, to facilitate hiring.

True Group, which operates True Fitness, True Yoga, TFX, and Yoga Edition, ceased operations on September 11. The parent company, Hong Kong listed Kontafarma China Holdings, cited liabilities and market competition from boutique gyms and digital training as reasons for the liquidation. Some employees reported being notified of the closure via email only an hour before the shutdown. While the SFA is assisting with employment, its president, Sean Tan, stated that the association will not be involved in recovering unpaid salaries or commissions.

The closure has also impacted consumers. The Consumers Association of Singapore reported 241 complaints with losses exceeding 609,000 dollars in unused memberships. While the SFA is discussing concessionary joining fees with member gyms for affected customers, it noted that credits for unused packages are unlikely. Additionally, foreign workers affected by the closure face potential departure from Singapore due to work pass cancellation regulations.
