The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) announced on September 4 that tests on cabbages and other vegetables imported from China found no evidence of formalin contamination. The agency conducted these tests as part of stepped up surveillance following reports that cabbages from Hebei province, China, had been treated with formalin, which is a formaldehyde solution.
The food safety scandal began after videos circulated online showing workers in Kangbao county, Hebei, dipping cabbage roots in a liquid before loading them for transport. Chinese authorities subsequently confirmed that formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, had been illegally used to preserve the vegetables during transportation. China launched nationwide inspections of perishable vegetables in response to the reports.
SFA stated that it utilizes a science based risk management approach and a food sampling and testing programme to ensure all products comply with Singapore food regulations. The agency confirmed it will continue monitoring and testing vegetables from China to ensure they are safe for consumption. SFA advised consumers to wash their hands before and after handling vegetables and to thoroughly wash any vegetables that are not ready to eat.
