A 43 year old Singaporean man was sentenced on September 1 to 22 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane for repeatedly raping his stepdaughter. The man pleaded guilty to four charges of rape, while another nine charges, including eight counts of rape and one for possession of obscene films, were taken into consideration during sentencing.
The court heard that the abuse occurred between June 2023 and February 2024, when the victim was 16 and 17 years old. The man, a delivery driver, raped the victim at least 12 times. These assaults took place in the back of his delivery van at a car park in Tampines and inside the family's one room flat while the victim's mother and six siblings slept nearby.
To facilitate the abuse and cover his tracks, the man sent lewd text messages and used cloud access to the victim's phone to delete them. He also installed CCTV cameras in the flat, which police later found contained recordings of the sexual abuse. The victim eventually captured a screenshot of the messages and confided in her boyfriend, a school teacher, and a school counsellor.
Following the discovery, the victim's 42 year old mother did not believe her and pressured her to drop the case. As a result, the victim was placed in a welfare home. Justice Andre Maniam noted that the man's breach of trust caused lasting damage to the victim and the family unit.
The man had been in a drug rehabilitation centre from March 2024 to September 2025 before being transferred to Changi Prison.
