Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) warned on August 24 that occasional periods of haze could affect the city state following an escalation in hotspot activity and dense smoke plumes in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra. The 24 hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remained in the moderate range throughout Monday, starting between 68 and 90 at 1pm and rising to 98 by 9pm. Air quality is officially classified as unhealthy when the PSI exceeds 100.
The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre has raised its alert to Level 2 for the southern region, signaling an increasing risk of transboundary haze. This risk is compounded by prevailing winds blowing from the south or southeast and persisting dry conditions. The Meteorological Service Singapore noted that while the situation is unlikely to be as severe as the 2015 episode, a strengthening El Nino event could increase the risk of dry conditions.
A 28 agency inter agency haze task force is prepared to implement tiered action plans if air quality deteriorates.
