Singapore aims to recruit 1,800 more infant care educators by 2030 to meet the rising demand for infant care places. The Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) announced the target on Friday, August 28, following Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's National Day Rally announcement that monthly fees for full day childcare and infant care will drop to S$150 and S$300 respectively by 2030. These lower fees will apply to every Singaporean child regardless of household income, with further reductions for lower income families.
To support this growth, the ECDA will expand the Manpower Hiring Grant starting in September. This place and train arrangement allows employers to hire candidates who then receive part time training. The grant covers up to 70 per cent of training stipends and 50 per cent of course fee subsidies for eligible trainees. Funding for the grant has been extended to December 31, 2030. The agency will also explore overseas partnerships to widen the candidate pool and provide additional support to encourage existing preschool educators to transition into infant care roles. Currently, over 2,000 educators hold infant care qualifications, but only about 4 per cent were working as infant educators as of August.
Additionally, the ECDA will introduce a new grant to help eligible preschool operators join the government supported network. This initiative aims to widen access to affordable services and allow smaller operators to benefit from government support. Senior Minister of State for Social and Family Development Goh Pei Ming emphasized that infant care requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure infants grow and develop holistically.
