Six Indian nationals were among a ten member crew aboard a Cameroon flagged cargo ship hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. The vessel, identified as the M/V LUTUF, was seized on Monday, August 17, 2026, approximately three and a half nautical miles off Marraya in Puntland's Eyl district. According to a Somali official, the ship was owned by Polar Movement Shipping and was transporting communications equipment and Turkish weapons destined for a military training facility in Mogadishu.
The crew included six Indians, one Turkish national, one Georgian, and two Serbian security guards. Eight pirates, who are believed to be linked to a previous hijacking in April, took the vessel toward the Nugaal coast near Garmaal in the Dangoroyo district. Turkish helicopters and drones monitored the area, and two Turkish owned vessels approached the ship.
On Tuesday, a small boat delivered khat, a local stimulant, to the vessel. Following the departure of that boat, an airstrike occurred that killed four men and wounded two others. It has not been independently verified who carried out the strike or if those killed were involved in the hijacking. The current status of the crew and the cargo remains unclear.
