South Korea added 184,000 jobs in August compared to a year earlier, marking the largest increase in five months, according to data from the Ministry of Data and Statistics released Wednesday. The total number of employed people reached 29.15 million in August, up from 28.97 million a year earlier. This growth represents three consecutive months of gains, following a decline of 40,000 jobs in May, which was the first drop in 17 months.

Despite the overall growth, employment conditions remained difficult for certain demographics and sectors. The employment rate for people aged 15 to 29 fell to 44.1 percent, a decrease of 1 percentage point from a year earlier and the 28th consecutive month of decline. Sectoral data showed that manufacturing lost 38,000 jobs, marking 26 consecutive months of decline. Other losses occurred in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry, which shed 109,000 jobs, and the construction industry, which lost 32,000 jobs. The accommodation and restaurant sector also declined by 61,000 jobs, a drop the data ministry attributed to the base effect of government vouchers distributed last year.

Growth was driven by the healthcare and social welfare sector, which added 186,000 positions, and the arts, sports and recreation services sector, which added 73,000 jobs. The national jobless rate remained unchanged at 2 percent, with the number of unemployed people totaling 588,000, down 4,000 from August 2025. Additionally, the number of people reporting they were simply resting fell by 89,000 to 2.55 million, which the data ministry suggests indicates that some individuals have returned to job searching.

In response to the data, the Ministry of Finance and Economy vowed to address employment challenges for vulnerable groups. The ministry noted that escalating tensions in the Middle East could impact future job creation and stated it would prepare job creation projects in the 2027 budget proposal and increase public sector jobs through interagency cooperation.
