South Korean defense firm Hanwha Aerospace Co. signed a deal on Thursday to export 18 Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) to Croatia. The contract is valued at approximately 640 billion won, which is roughly 410 million euros or 477 million US dollars, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
This agreement represents the first major arms deal between the two nations. Croatia is the fourth European country to acquire the Chunmoo system, following Poland, Estonia, and Norway. The system was primarily designed to counter North Korean long range artillery and is capable of precision strikes and cluster attacks with an operational range of up to 80 kilometers.
Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic attended the signing ceremony. During the event, Ahn stated that the system would boost Croatia's defense capabilities and deepen security cooperation. Additionally, Defense Minister Ahn and Croatian Defense Minister Ivan Anusic signed a memorandum of understanding on defense partnership to establish a framework for regular working level dialogue.
DAPA indicated that the deal opens avenues for broader strategic partnership, including industrial cooperation and military logistics support.
