  • A hatched block means the outlet is affiliated with, or controlled by, a state.

Political lean describes where an outlet sits within the politics of its own country. It is never a position on a single global scale.

Political lean is comparable inside one country and not across them, which is why the bar groups by country first. Publicly funded broadcasters are not marked as state-linked.

The owner of each outlet is listed as a matter of record, not as a judgement about the outlet.

Every source for this story reports from South Korea.

South Korean stocks opened sharply higher on Monday, September 7, driven by gains in technology and semiconductor shares. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose approximately 3.3 percent at the opening bell, reaching 6,909.61 points. This growth occurred despite heightened military tensions in the Middle East, where Iran reported targeting U.S. linked vessels and oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for U.S. attacks on Iranian tankers.

The surge in Seoul followed the release of OpenAI's new GPT-6 Astra, which is expected to increase demand for memory chips. This news pushed the PHLX semiconductor index up 3.38 percent, offsetting a lower close on Wall Street on Friday caused by strong U.S. job data and potential Federal Reserve rate hikes. In Seoul, Samsung Electronics rose between 3.91 and 4.4 percent, while SK hynix jumped between 5.4 and 5.89 percent. Other gains were seen in LG Electronics, Hanmi Semiconductor, and Hyundai Motor.

By late Monday morning, the KOSPI remained up 2.97 percent at 6,886.09 points. The Korean won also strengthened, trading at approximately 1,344 won against the U.S. dollar.
