Spain Battles Simultaneous Forest Fires and Flash Floods

Around 1,000 people were evacuated from the village of Gatova, northwest of Valencia, as a forest fire spread through the region. The blaze, which is believed to have been started by a lightning strike late Thursday, burned more than 400 hectares of land by Friday evening. Spain's Military Emergency Unit (UME), firefighting helicopters, and aircraft were deployed to combat the flames, which moved close to built up areas. Juan Carlos Valderrama, the civil protection minister for the Valencia autonomous community, stated that buses were provided for residents without vehicles. One source noted that while Gatova has 450 permanent residents, that number doubles during summer months due to tourists.

Simultaneously, heavy rainfall caused flash floods along the Costa Dorada in the Catalonia region. The Meteorological Service of Catalonia recorded nearly 200 liters of rain per square meter in a few hours, leaving streets in El Vendrell, Comarruga, and Torredembarra partially submerged. Emergency services reported at least seven injuries, including three people injured by a collapsing wall at the port of Roda de Bera and two others injured by a wall collapse at a nearby campsite. Firefighters conducted over 200 rescue missions to save people trapped in vehicles and buildings. Approximately 300 people were evacuated from the campsite, while another 100 were evacuated from a disco in Vendrell.
