Spanish Exchange Student Murdered in Morelos, Mexico

Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a 21 year old student from the University of Granada in Spain, was murdered on September 12 while participating in an academic exchange program at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (UAEM). The victim, who was studying Early Childhood Education, was attacked with a knife in the vicinity of the Casa de la Cultura in Cuautla, Morelos, during a medicinal plant festival. The Fiscalía General del Estado de Morelos is investigating the crime under a feminicide protocol, although initial hypotheses suggested a possible robbery. Governor Margarita González Saravia and Fiscal Fernando Blumenkron stated that authorities are coordinating with the Spanish consulate to support the family.

The murder has sparked widespread condemnation in Spain. The University of Granada held a minute of silence, and the president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, called for a thorough investigation into the terrible event. The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) noted that the tragedy highlights the vulnerability and insecurity women continue to face. The University of Granada's dean indicated that the institution would analyze the situation to determine if international agreements need to be reviewed based on the risks involved.

Reports from center right sources provide broader context regarding violence at the UAEM. According to one report, Tacoronte is the fourth student linked to the university to be murdered or found dead in 2026. Previous cases include Kimberly Joselín Ramos Beltrán and Karol Toledo Gómez, both 18, who were found dead in March, and 15 year old Michelle Itzayana Fuentes Calderón, who was found dead in June. These earlier deaths led to student protests and the occupation of university facilities to demand better security and justice.
