Spanish Government Approves 309 Million Euro Plan for Ceuta Amid Planned Royal Visit

The Spanish government has approved a royal decree law providing 309 million euros in urgent support for the city of Ceuta. The financial package includes 118 million euros for humanitarian reception of migrants, 90 million euros for security reinforcements, 80 million euros in direct aid to businesses and self employed workers, and 21 million euros for essential services such as health and education. Minister of Economy Carlos Cuerpo stated that the plan serves as a shock response to provide confidence to workers and businesses, noting that the total amount represents 16 percent of Ceuta's GDP.

Simultaneously, the government confirmed a forthcoming visit by King Felipe VI to the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. While a specific date has not yet been set, government sources stated that Spain is a sovereign nation and expects Morocco to understand the visit. This follows a 2007 visit by the previous monarchs that triggered a diplomatic crisis with Morocco, which at the time called the trip an inadmissible provocation.
