Spanish NATO Commander Investigated Over Relationship With Russian Born Woman

A Spanish naval commander stationed at the Northwood base in the United Kingdom was suspended and returned to Spain following an espionage investigation by NATO and Spanish security services. The investigation was triggered by the officer's romantic relationship with a 49 year old woman of Russian origin, whom he met on the dating app Tinder. The Northwood base serves as a primary command center for NATO naval operations, where it monitors Russian naval activity and the Kremlin's shadow fleet used to bypass sanctions.

The woman, who holds dual British and Polish citizenship, denied being a Russian spy. She reported that while visiting her sick father in Saint Petersburg, she was approached by an officer from the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) named Andrei. According to her account, the officer questioned her for two hours about the NATO security investigation and her relationship with the commander. She stated that she told the agent the commander never discussed his work at home.

The couple moved in together shortly after meeting and the commander requested visitor access for her to attend a Christmas party at the base on December 12, 2024. This event, along with the woman's Russian origin and her hobby of target shooting, raised security alarms. While both sources agree on the sequence of events, they frame the situation differently.
