STF President Fachin Manages Tensions and Secrecy in Banco Master Case

Supreme Court President Edson Fachin has pressured Attorney General Paulo Gonet to recuse himself from the Banco Master case and the upcoming court session on Tuesday, October 15. The session will analyze a report suggesting Justice Alexandre de Moraes acted as an interlocutor for former banker Daniel Vorcaro. Fachin suggested that the PGR be represented by another prosecutor, such as Vice Attorney General Hindenburgo Chateaubriand, to avoid conflicts of interest. The investigation includes messages where Vorcaro allegedly asked Moraes to influence Gonet and the head of the Federal Police to block an operation against the bank, as well as claims that Gonet's son received a paid trip to London from the banker. Gonet has denied a close relationship with Vorcaro and stated that Moraes never requested interference in investigations.

Simultaneously, a conflict has emerged between Justices Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça regarding the transparency of the case. Moraes informed Fachin that Mendonça failed to fully lift the secrecy of the proceedings, accusing him of a selective choice by omitting 180 documents. Mendonça had previously lifted the secrecy of 14 procedures and the main case in response to Fachin's request, excluding only materials essential for ongoing measures.

Meanwhile, the defense of Daniel Vorcaro is waiting for the outcome of Tuesday's session to determine its strategy. Vorcaro has previously avoided accusing powerful figures, but sources indicate that the result of the session and the current correlation of forces in the court may influence whether he decides to provide a plea bargain.
