An extratropical cyclone passing along the coast of Southern Brazil is bringing strong winds and a cold front to the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro this Friday, October 21. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued an orange alert for danger in the northern coast of São Paulo and the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro, where wind gusts are expected to range between 60 km/h and 100 km/h. These conditions pose risks of falling trees, roof damage, and general destruction to buildings and crops.
In São Paulo, the strong winds led to the temporary paralysis of the ferry crossing between São Sebastião and Ilhabela on Friday morning. In Rio de Janeiro, authorities including the Fire Department and municipal agents advised stand up paddle practitioners to leave the sea due to gusts that could exceed 76 km/h. The city of Rio is currently under Stage 2 alert status.
Following the wind, a cold front and polar air mass are expected to lower temperatures across São Paulo.
