A Dutch study involving 1,095 women has found that the female brain changes differently during menopause than it does during puberty and pregnancy. Published in the journal Nature Communications, the research utilized MRI scans to track changes in gray matter within the cerebral cortex during these three major hormonal transition periods. The findings indicate that gray matter decreases during puberty and pregnancy, whereas it remains stable during menopause. Researchers Sophie van ’t Hof and Elseline Hoekzema from Amsterdam UMC noted that while a decrease in gray matter might be interpreted as cognitive decline, it should instead be viewed as a period of brain development. In puberty, the decrease occurs across the entire cerebral cortex, while during pregnancy, it is concentrated in areas related to sensing and understanding others. Nicole Gervais, a neuroscientist at the University of Groningen who was not involved in the study, praised the research design but noted that the authors did not further investigate how these changes relate to mental health or the increased risk of Alzheimer's during menopause. The study highlights a broader gap in medical research, as only 5 percent of neurological studies distinguish between male and female biology.
