Switzerland and Germany Push for Migrant Returns to Italy as Church Grants Asylum to Somali Woman

Switzerland and Germany are moving to return asylum seekers to Italy in accordance with the new EU migration pact. Switzerland announced that it will gradually resume the repatriation of migrants who first arrived on Italian coasts, with return flights scheduled to begin in late August. While the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration noted that the number of potential returns could range from a few hundred to several thousand depending on the interpretation of the pact, the process remains a point of political tension for the government of Giorgia Meloni. The Italian government had previously suspended these readmission procedures in 2022, citing heavy migratory pressure.

Amidst these diplomatic tensions, a 22 year old Somali woman facing expulsion from Germany to Italy has been granted humanitarian asylum by an evangelical church in Nuremberg. Stefan Reichel, president of the Matteo Church and Asylum association, stated that the woman will remain under church protection until Germany agrees to cancel the transfer request. Reichel cited the woman's psychological distress and the fact that her mother and siblings are well integrated in Bavaria as reasons for the asylum. He also criticized the conditions the woman previously experienced in a Milan center, describing them as having poor hygiene and shared spaces between men and women.
