Syria has started destroying remnants of a clandestine chemical weapons program from the era of former President Bashar al Assad. This marks the first such destruction in the country since 2014. Izumi Nakamitsu, the United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, informed the Security Council on Thursday that the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons verified the irreversible destruction of 42 aerial bombs. These munitions were part of a discovery made in May that included raw materials, empty munitions, a production facility, and a chemical used in nerve agents.
Syria's ambassador to the U.N. Ibrahim Olabi, stated that Syria is protecting the region through these actions. However, Olabi criticized Israel, claiming that Israeli attacks have impeded search and destruction operations and put Syrian teams at risk. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Syrian authorities have taken 18 suspects into custody, including high level military, political, and technical officials, for their alleged involvement in the program. Olabi noted that Syria is preparing to hold the first court hearings for these individuals.
