Tadej Pogacar will not compete for the remainder of the year after suffering a heavy crash during the Vuelta a España. The 27 year old Slovenian rider sustained a fractured left collarbone, a cervical vertebra fracture, a concussion, and multiple abrasions. UAE Team Emirates announced that Pogacar underwent surgery and will now focus on his recovery in Monte Carlo. The injuries force him to miss the World Championships in Montreal, where he hoped to win a third consecutive title, as well as the European Championships and the Giro di Lombardia. At the time of his exit from the Vuelta, Pogacar had been leading the race and was the favorite to complete a career sweep of the three Grand Tours. In a simultaneous announcement, UAE Team Emirates revealed that Pogacar has extended his contract through the end of the 2032 season. This extension moves his previous contract end date from 2030 to 2032. Pogacar stated that the team has felt like home since he joined as a professional in 2019 and that he believes it is the right place to achieve his remaining career goals. Medical director Adrian Rotunno noted that while recovery is progressing well, the combination of injuries necessitated the decision to end the season early.
