Taliban Face Internal and External Pressures Five Years After Taking Power

The Taliban have faced a significant security breach in the northeastern province of Badakhshan, where they briefly lost control of the Yaftal e Payeen district capital. This event marks the first time the regime has lost control of a district center since returning to power in August 2021. Reports from the region also indicate internal clashes among Taliban fighters and fatal attacks on high ranking officials. In response to the instability, former Afghan army general Sami Sadat, speaking from the United States, ordered the United Front to begin military operations against the Taliban across the country on August 2. Other groups, such as the National Resistance Front, have maintained a continuous armed struggle since 2021. Additionally, the regional branch of the Islamic State remains active, having claimed responsibility for attacks including a January explosion at a Chinese restaurant in Kabul and a December 2024 suicide bombing that killed the Minister of Refugees, Khalil Ur Rahman Haqqani. Internationally, the Taliban remain viewed as illegitimate by most governments, with Russia being the only nation to acknowledge them as the official government. Tensions have also escalated with Pakistan, with a UN report stating that cross border hostilities in early 2026 caused at least 372 civilian deaths. Humanitarian conditions have also deteriorated, with Save the Children reporting that nearly one in ten children under five suffers from acute malnutrition. The regime continues to impose strict restrictions on women, including bans on work and education beyond the sixth grade.
