Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Warns Against Abusive Language Toward Women in Assembly

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay issued a strong warning on Monday against the use of derogatory remarks and personal attacks targeting women. Speaking during an Assembly debate on Home department grants, Vijay stated that defamatory language and double meaning comments would invite uncompromising legal action. He credited women as the main reason for his political victory and asserted that he would not tolerate abusive language directed at them.

While Vijay did not name specific individuals, his remarks followed a controversy involving DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin. Stalin was recently arrested and later released on station bail after making double meaning remarks during a protest over the Cauvery issue, which were seen as references to actor Trisha. The Chief Minister described the current political climate in Tamil Nadu as a river of vulgarity and hatred. He further invoked the 1989 humiliation of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the Assembly to emphasize that political differences do not justify such behavior.

Beyond the issue of gender based attacks, Vijay criticized the opposition for using physical threats and failing to respect the democratic mandate. He cited the poet Kannadasan to attack the conduct of the DMK. On the topic of governance, the Chief Minister stated that a state's progress is measured by the safety and freedom of its citizens rather than just physical infrastructure. He pledged that policing would remain free from political interference and noted that 36 people had been arrested in connection with a student's murder in Coimbatore.
