Tel Aviv University Study Finds 1,370 Doctors Left Israel Over Three Years

Approximately 1,370 doctors left Israel for periods longer than 12 months between 2023 and 2025, according to research from Tel Aviv University. This figure represents a fivefold increase in annual departures compared to the previous decade. The study, conducted by Prof. Itai Ater, Prof. Nittai Bergman, and Doron Zamir, found that 416 doctors left in 2023, 530 in 2024, and a preliminary estimate of 419 in 2025. Even when accounting for those who returned, Israel saw a net loss of 509 doctors in 2023 and 2024, averaging 255 per year. This is a significant rise from the 2010 to 2019 period, which saw an average annual net loss of 54 doctors. The exodus affected various specialties, with the highest rates among pediatricians, ophthalmologists, dermatologists, and ear, nose, and throat specialists at 6.2 percent. Additionally, 14 percent of the physicians who decided to leave were experienced doctors, and 20 percent were over the age of 45. Researchers noted that while some doctors leave for specialized training or research, the trend could harm the quality of medical care and the training of future physicians. Prof. Ater stated that the departure of nearly 1,400 doctors translates to longer waiting times and less effective medical care.
