A Turkish cargo ship sank in the Marmara Sea near Istanbul early Wednesday morning after colliding with another vessel. Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated that the bulk carrier, named the Tugberk Imamoglu, sank rapidly within 11 minutes. All 10 crew members on board were Turkish nationals, and authorities report that no one has been found alive.
The collision occurred around 3 a.m. local time off the city's western Silivri district. The Tugberk Imamoglu, a 90 meter vessel carrying 4,200 tons of rolled steel, was traveling from Iskenderun to the Black Sea port of Eregli. It collided with the Alsu, a 91 meter chemical tanker sailing from Kocaeli to the Aegean port of Aliaga. The Alsu was empty at the time and reportedly suffered no damage.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing with two helicopters and 12 vessels scouring the area. The maritime directorate reported finding a lifeboat from the Tugberk Imamoglu floating on the surface, but the crew members were not inside. Authorities believe the ship sank in waters approximately 900 meters deep. The cause of the collision remains unknown.
