Tens of thousands of people gathered in the central square of Zagreb on Saturday to protest the Croatian government's delay in removing more than 30,000 tons of industrial waste. The demonstration, titled Walk for Lika, refers to the mountainous region where the waste is stored. Authorities discovered between 34,000 and 37,000 tons of waste on a plot of land near the city of Gospić last year, with a significant portion of the material imported from Italy during 2023 and 2024.
Environmentalists claim the waste, which includes medical and industrial materials, is contaminating the air, soil, and drinking water in a region known for its preserved nature. Protesters carried banners calling for an end to the destruction of Croatia and stating that nature does not forgive. International actor Rade Serbedzija joined the rally, stating that it is a duty to defend the country and that those responsible must be held accountable.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic visited Gospić on Wednesday and stated that the government has selected a company to execute the first phase of the cleanup, which involves removing the waste from the site. However, protesters and environmentalists argue that the government's response has been too slow.
