Christopher Nolan's epic film "The Odyssey" remained at the top of the South Korean weekend box office chart for the fifth consecutive week, surpassing 10 million total admissions. According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the film added 698,395 admissions over the weekend, bringing its total to 10,027,997 as of Sunday. This achievement makes it the second most watched film in South Korea this year and the 10th foreign film to ever reach the 10 million mark in the country.
Based on Homer's epic poem, the movie stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, and features a cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Zendaya. The film appears likely to maintain its lead, as it accounted for 45.4 percent of ticket pre sales as of Monday morning. Upcoming Korean films "The Assassin(s)" and "Intern" followed with 11.5 percent and 11 percent of advance sales, respectively.
Other American films took the second and third spots. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" added 146,678 admissions, while the low budget horror film "Obsession" attracted 138,442 admissions during its opening weekend. Korean productions ranked lower, with "Road to Gyeong-ju" in fourth place with 49,417 admissions and the family drama "Portrait of a Family" in fifth with 40,840 admissions on its debut weekend.
