Thousands of people demonstrated in the main cities of Gambia between Monday, September 7 and Tuesday, September 8 to protest prolonged power cuts that have lasted for several weeks. Protesters blocked roads and burned tires to denounce government inaction. In response to the unrest, President Adama Barrow addressed the nation on Tuesday evening. The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) is currently struggling to meet rising demand with its own generation. Consequently, Gambian authorities are seeking increased electricity imports from Senegal and Guinea. These blackouts occur just months before the December election in Banjul.
