Three people died on Monday morning when a small Cessna 172 aircraft crashed into a field in Erkelenz, North Rhine Westphalia. The crash occurred around 11:15 or 11:20 AM in the Gerderath area, south of Mönchengladbach. All three occupants of the plane were killed, and the aircraft was completely destroyed upon impact.
Vliegschool Hilversum confirmed that one of its aircraft was involved in the incident. The flight school has suspended all operations until more information becomes available. While it remains unclear if the pilot was a student, reports indicate the plane may have started its journey in the Netherlands. Witnesses described the aircraft as flying unusually low and making strange movements before crashing. It is currently unknown if the pilot intended to land at a small airstrip located nearby in Erkelenz.
Emergency services, including the fire department and police, responded to the scene. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation and the Federal Air Traffic Control are conducting investigations into the cause of the crash. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
