A homemade explosive device detonated on Saturday evening at the Balzi Rossi restaurant in central Moscow, killing at least three people and injuring 21 others. The blast occurred near Kudrinskaya Square around 8 p.m. local time. According to Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee, a woman carrying the device attempted to enter the restaurant but was stopped by a security guard. The resulting explosion killed the woman, the guard, and a restaurant patron. While official reports confirmed three deaths, some sources and Telegram channels reported that the death toll rose to five after two more victims died in the hospital. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the incident as a brutal terrorist attack and stated that those responsible would be punished.
The restaurant had been closed to the public for a private event. Several reports, including those from center-right outlets, indicate that the intended target may have been General Alexandr Chaiko, the commander in chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, who was reportedly celebrating his 55th birthday and a recent promotion. Some reports specify that Chaiko previously commanded troops linked to war crimes in Bucha. Other reports suggest that Maria Chayko, the general's daughter, may have been among the injured, while her husband, Daniil Peredriy, may have been killed.
Law enforcement sealed off the area, and the event caused the cancellation of a planned night cycling tour in the city center. Some analysts noted similarities between this attack and the 2023 bombing of pro-war blogger Vladlen Tatarsky, as both involved a bomb hidden in a gift delivered by a woman. Some sources suggested the device may have been detonated remotely, implying the woman carrying it might not have known its contents. While Russian officials have not officially named a perpetrator, center-right and center-left sources note that Russia frequently blames Kyiv for such assassinations of military figures.
