The Thuringian parliamentary group of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) has voted unanimously to remain in the governing coalition with the CDU and SPD. During a meeting in Erfurt, 13 of the 15 group members participated in the decision. Group leader Sigrid Hupach stated that the decision ensures stability, peace, and social justice for the people of Thuringia.
This decision contradicts the demands of the BSW federal leadership, which had urged the Thuringian state association to leave the so called blackberry coalition. According to a center left source, this federal pressure follows the TU Chemnitz university's decision to revoke the doctoral title of Minister President Mario Voigt of the CDU.
Party founder Sahra Wagenknecht has since called for a credible, non partisan government head who can end the firewall and govern with shifting majorities. She expressed support for demands from four BSW district associations to hold a special state party convention. Thuringian BSW state leaders Katja Wolf and Gernot Süßmuth have indicated they are open to such a convention to discuss the party's future course with the grassroots membership. Wolf, who also serves as the Thuringian Finance Minister, argued that the BSW was founded to effect change, which can be achieved through government responsibility.
