TMC Leader Abhishek Banerjee's Kolkata Office Ransacked; BJP Denies Involvement

The office of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee on Camac Street in Kolkata was ransacked and looted by masked men in the early hours of Thursday, September 3, 2026. CCTV footage shared by Banerjee shows individuals removing electronic equipment, including televisions and monitors, while leaving behind shattered glass and broken furniture. The incident is reported to have occurred between 3:30 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.

Banerjee alleged that the attack was carried out by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters, describing the event as political thuggery. He called for the resignation of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, stating that the Chief Minister has no moral authority to remain in office if the opposition is treated with violence and intimidation. Banerjee also urged the Calcutta High Court, the West Bengal governor, and the Prime Minister's Office to intervene to uphold the rule of law.

TMC IT Cell in-charge Upashna Chowdhury claimed that the attackers assaulted security guards and that police failed to respond to multiple calls during the incident. In contrast, BJP legislator Sajal Ghosh denied any party involvement, asserting that the allegations are an attempt by Banerjee to remain politically relevant after the BJP came to power in May 2026.

Police have registered FIRs and detained six people for questioning. The office has recently been the subject of other disputes, including a scuffle on August 27 over the removal of a party hoarding and a fire services inspection that alleged unauthorized construction. Banerjee is currently facing more than 16 FIRs since the change in government, though the Calcutta High Court has granted him protection from arrest in some cases.
