Torrential rains that hit Chiba Prefecture on August 13 and 14 have resulted in 10 deaths and left two men missing. One victim, a man in his thirties, died from carbon monoxide poisoning while using a generator during a power outage. In the city of Chiba, rainfall reached 367 millimeters, which is three times the monthly average for August, while the town of Sakura recorded a regional record of 189.5 millimeters in three hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a level 5 emergency alert, the highest danger level, for the first time since the system was launched in May.

In the aftermath, municipalities are working to clear approximately 2,700 abandoned vehicles that became submerged during the flooding. In Chiba city, officials have moved about 500 of the 2,500 stranded cars on managed roads. The remaining vehicles have blocked lanes and caused traffic jams and rear end crashes as traffic increased following the Obon holidays. A disaster volunteer center was established on Monday to assist with cleaning damaged homes.
