Toyota Corolla Marks 60 Years Amid Rising Competition from Chinese Rivals

The Toyota Corolla reaches its 60th anniversary in October, having sold over 57 million units across at least 150 countries since its introduction in 1966. Despite its long history, the model is facing significant pressure from the Chinese automotive industry. In Brazil, the sedan experienced a 36.5 percent drop in sales between January and August compared to the same period in 2025, with 15,540 units sold. Data from Fenabrave indicates that the BYD King has taken second place in the segment with 11,233 registrations this year, offering a lower price and a more advanced hybrid system. The Corolla first arrived in Brazil as an import in the early 1990s before national production began in September 1999 at the Indaiatuba plant. While the vehicle has evolved significantly in safety, interior space, and energy efficiency, price points have remained relatively stable when adjusted for inflation. For example, the top equipped SE-G version from 2001 would cost approximately R$ 214,500 today, which is close to the current price of the Altis Premium Hybrid at R$ 210,090.
