TRE-PR Approves Senate Candidacy of Deltan Dallagnol in 4 to 3 Vote

The Regional Electoral Court of Paraná (TRE-PR) approved the candidacy registration of Deltan Dallagnol for the Senate on Tuesday. The decision followed a seven hour trial that ended in a 4 to 3 vote. The ruling allows the Novo party candidate to run in the upcoming October elections. The decision was based on the view of the rapporteur, Judge Vanessa Jamus Marchi, that administrative procedures against Dallagnol at the National Council of the Public Ministry (CNMP) have been closed or did not result in sanctions. This contradicts a 2023 ruling by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which had stripped Dallagnol of his federal deputy seat by concluding that his resignation from the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in 2021 was an attempt to evade the Clean Slate Law.

While the court approved his candidacy, the president of the TRE-PR, Luciano Carrasco Falavinha Souza, fined Dallagnol 100,000 reais for bad faith litigation. This penalty was linked to the disclosure of confidential documents belonging to Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. Dallagnol celebrated the decision in a note, calling the 2023 ruling an injustice and targeting PT national president Gleisi Hoffmann. Conversely, the PT and PDT coalition, which challenged the registration, announced plans to appeal the decision to the TSE. Their legal representative described the registration as a fraud and an attempt to create political chaos.
