Trial Begins in Mexico for Alleged Murder of Australian Surfers and American Friend

Three men have gone on trial in Ensenada, Mexico, for the alleged murders of Australian brothers Callum and Jake Robinson and their American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad. The victims, all in their early 30s, were shot in the head and their bodies were found in a well or cliff top shaft in Baja California after they went missing during a surfing trip in April 2024. Prosecutors allege the men were killed during a bungled robbery and auto theft, while the defense argues there is insufficient evidence to prove this theory.

Prosecutors are seeking sentences of more than 200 years for the defendants, with an additional 168 years sought for the alleged ringleader. One individual, the ex girlfriend of a defendant, was previously convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the killings. During the opening proceedings, the parents of the Robinson brothers attended the court to witness the trial. Testimony has included a witness who described one defendant as violent and claimed he was threatened with death if he spoke about the crime.

Callum Robinson was a professional lacrosse player in the US, Jake Robinson was pursuing a medical career, and Rhoad was killed shortly before his wedding. While reports note that Baja California is plagued by organized crime, they also state that tourists are rarely targeted for such violent attacks in the region's surf towns.
