President Donald Trump told CNN reporter Kristen Holmes to shut up during a White House press conference on Monday. The incident occurred while Trump was hosting a lifeguard and a ten year old boy he had rescued in California. Trump called Holmes disrespectful and a fake news reporter after she asked if he had spoken with North Korean leader Kim Jong un before canceling a joint military exercise with South Korea.
Following the event, a White House account on X intensified the conflict by stating that Holmes' children would one day be ashamed and disgusted by their mother, calling her question disgusting and inhumane. CNN defended Holmes in a statement, describing her as a respected reporter who asked a relevant question on behalf of the American people. The network stated that personal attacks on journalists are incompatible with the principles of press freedom.
The confrontation took place amid reports from CNN and other outlets regarding deteriorating conditions for sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The nuclear aircraft carrier has been at sea since November 2025 and is currently in the Middle East for the war against Iran. While the Navy Times and Stars and Stripes reported suicide attempts on board, the Pentagon has denied these claims. Trump asserted that the ship is in great condition and accused the press of lying.
