Trump Orders Scale Back of US South Korea Military Drills Amid Iran Dispute

President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, specifically targeting the 11 day Ulchi Freedom Shield drills. Trump described the exercises as inappropriate and hostile toward North Korea and cited both the cost of the drills and his positive personal relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as justifications for the decision. The announcement coincided with the start of the exercises on Monday, which are designed to prepare for contingencies involving North Korea.

In response, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung defended the alliance with the United States but emphasized the need to strengthen South Korea's independent defense capabilities. Lee reaffirmed his commitment to regaining wartime operational control of troops from the United States by 2030. National Security Adviser Wi Sung lac stated that Seoul remains in close consultation with Washington regarding the exercises. Meanwhile, US Forces Korea Commander General Xavier Brunson visited the South Korean defense ministry on Tuesday to meet with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu back.

Trump linked the reduction of the drills to a dispute over Iran, claiming that South Korea refused to assist in a military operation to denuclearize Tehran. Trump questioned the logic of providing security for allies who do not help the United States in its own military operations. South Korean officials responded by stating they have participated in international non proliferation efforts and discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

Regional allies expressed concern over the move. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called cooperation between Japan, the United States, and South Korea critical for regional stability. Australian official Richard Marles noted Canberra's ongoing concern regarding North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. North Korea has not responded publicly to the scale back, although it previously warned it would respond with a new level of deterrence to provocative exercises.
