He claimed that Iran is broke and experiencing inflation of over 300 percent, asserting that the U.S. maintains total control of the Strait of Hormuz. While Trump continues to keep the option of military strikes on the table, he is focusing on the economic damage caused by sanctions and a naval blockade of Iranian ports. New measures targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were announced at the end of July, and reports indicate that advisors have provided Trump with data on the impact of these sanctions. Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution noted that Iran is in terrible economic shape and cannot ship oil at any meaningful level. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei described the push for sanctions as a retreat, arguing that the U.S. relies on sanctions when diplomacy fails.
