TSE Validates Several Presidential Candidacies While Pablo Marçal and Augusto Cury Await Ruling

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) has validated the presidential candidacies of Renan Santos, Wilson Grassi, and Clariana Barão. This brings the total number of validated candidacies to 11 out of 13 total requests. Two candidates, Pablo Marçal and Augusto Cury, are still awaiting judgment. The legal deadline for the TSE to conclude the analysis of presidential registrations is September 14.

Pablo Marçal faces the most precarious situation. He is currently ineligible until 2032 due to a conviction by the Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP) for the undue use of communication media during the 2024 mayoral race. Specifically, the court found that he promoted a massive publication of short videos by promising cash prizes to content creators with the most views. While the TRE-SP later reversed a finding of abuse of economic power, his overall ineligibility remains. Additionally, the Electoral General Prosecutor's Office (PGE) has requested the rejection of his candidacy because he allegedly failed to prove party affiliation with the PRTB within the legal timeframe.

Renan Santos' candidacy was validated following a period of uncertainty. Minister Dias Toffoli had previously suspended parts of Santos' digital campaign due to suspected irregularities regarding social media profiles, but he later reversed that decision.

Outlets with a center-right lean frame the situation as a procedural wait for candidacy confirmation, with one specifically suggesting that Marçal's presence in the race may strategically benefit other candidates by occupying space on the right. In contrast, the center-leaning outlet focuses more heavily on the specific legal violations and the likelihood that Marçal's participation will be barred by the court.
