Turkey has prepared a plan to ensure the safe passage of grain through the Black Sea and is currently in contact with Russia and Ukraine regarding the proposal. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced the plan during a press conference in Istanbul on Monday, stating that Turkey is working to achieve an agreement similar to the previous grain deal if necessary conditions emerge.
Turkey and the United Nations previously mediated the Black Sea Grain Initiative in July 2022. That agreement allowed for the export of nearly 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian grain despite the ongoing war. Russia withdrew from that specific agreement in 2023, citing obstacles facing its own exports of food and fertilizer.
