Turkish Authorities Arrest Opposition Mayor Erdal Besikcioglu in Corruption Probe

Turkish authorities arrested Erdal Besikcioglu, the opposition mayor of Ankara's Etimesgut district, as part of a wider anti-corruption operation on July 30. Besikcioglu is a former actor known for his role in the television series Behzat C. He won the mayoral seat for the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in 2024. According to government sources, the operation targeted up to 55 suspects across nine provinces, including municipal employees and business executives. Charges include embezzlement, bribery, fraud in public procurement, and membership of a criminal organization.

This arrest follows other detentions of opposition figures, such as Istanbul's former mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and the mayor of Uskudar. Reports indicate that at least 28 CHP mayors and hundreds of officials have been detained since 2024. Ozgur Ozel, who recently founded a new party after being deposed as CHP leader by a court, claims these actions are politically motivated. The government maintains that the judiciary is independent.
